David Oranchak, the Virginia web designer who helped crack the cipher, told the Chronicle on Wednesday that it was "unlikely" the killer included his name as an anagram in the letters. The Zodiac Killer gained notoriety with his letters to the newspapers and to police, in which he claimed to have murdered as many as 37 people. Investigators have worked on the basis of seven victims in total, five of them homicides.

By Bruce Haring. A cold-case task force led by former FBI agents and retired law enforcement officials claims they have finally uncovered the identity of the mysterious Zodiac Killer. The arch criminal terrorized Northern California in the late s in a series of random murders, but grew in notoriety because of his cryptic notes to authorities and media.
He has never been identified by authorities, who only recently cracked the code on one of his letters. But despite the attention this week, police and some investigators remain skeptical of the alleged development. The Zodiac has managed to stay in the headlines for years, as new theories continue to surface. The Case Breakers said they had new physical and forensic evidence and eyewitnesses who supported their theory that an air force veteran who died in was behind the murders.
The FBI and San Francisco police department declined to directly comment on the announcement but said the investigation was still open. The Case Breakers said in a press release they had made their identification based in part on photos of the suspect that show scars on his forehead that match a police sketch of the Zodiac.
However, the FBI stated that the case was still open. We strive for accuracy and fairness. If you see something that doesn't look right, contact us!
