Why do people hate birmingham

Lost jobs. Lost income. And surrounding mining towns were decimated. Maybe because the battle for survival was never made into an iconic movie like Full Monty or Pride. I have a firm belief that the majority of regional hate directed at this area is founded in classism, elitism and plain old British snobbery.

It gets to a point where people just associate the West Midlands and the Black Country with poverty. Is it because you detest Jaguar Land Rover and the input to engineering that the region has made? Do you resent the invention of photocopiers, postage stamps and X-rays?

Is it an aversion to canals? Or maybe you just really hate Sam Allardyce? Even with consistent funding neglect, cuts and sneering jibes, Birmingham and the Black Country is, and will always be, a cultural hub have you ever been to a gig at the Wolverhampton Civic? When my train from London pulls into the station at Birmingham New Street and I make the walk through the centre of town to Moor Street so I can get my connecting train to Kidderminster, I am immediately at home.

I am often tired, hungover and running late but once I can hear the warm drawl of the locals, the friendly bustle of the city and taste the reasonably priced pints, I feel myself shift from cynical London journalist to chatty local. Everyone has one. We are a larger city so it makes sense, but we are much more than that and definitely much better than having to just be associated with it so get over it! Yes, we are ashamed and do hang our heads in disappointment at ourselves.

Birmingham is in the Midlands i. The Black Country and Wolverhampton are not Birmingham. Stop trying to make it happen! Highly doubt that there is any other city whose commuters have to wait 50 minutes for a bus and then have three turn up at the same time or have buses just randomly disappear off the live timetable feed. But we also have some of the most beautiful country parks — Lickey Hills , Shire Country Park and Sutton Park — the views are incredible.

No, we are not all gang members , nor do we ever wish we were but we sure as hell will milk the tourism and attention Birmingham gets for it. We have six universities, making us the largest UK center for higher education outside of London.

We were also at the center of the Midlands Enlightenment during the second half of the eighteenth century and the home of the original Lunar Society where prominent industrialists, philosophers and intellectuals met regularly. But, it is also a pivotal meeting point. It just is. Get over it. Nor are they some exotic restaurants with foods and drinks from the Far East and Polynesia.

Islands are literally roundabouts. George and while there are celebrations for St. George across the city, why we go overboard for St. The one on the far right swings out to reveal a sun and the one on the far left swings out to reveal a rain cloud. It can snow everywhere in the country and yet will never come to us. If outsiders even dare, all hell will break loose.

London is the capital of the UK and was once perhaps in some ways still is the capital of the world. It is full of history and things to see and do.

It is probably the coolest city on the planet. That is all fine if you are a tourist. But Londoners are, by definition, not tourists. They live here. They do not take an interest in the history. They do not go to see and do the things that tourists do.

They do not have the time to stand around being cool. And having bought it, they spend an hour travelling each day, each way, to reach their place of work. Whereas Brummies spend 20 minutes.

Londoners struggle through the traffic to reach their nearest supermarket. Brummies have a choice of half-a-dozen within an easy drive. Okay, I think I've answered my own question. Londoners hate Birmingham because they are jealous. Why am I here? I think the answer lies in a riddle ;- Q. What's the difference between a Brummie and a Londoner? A Brummie is a shining wit. Regards, Dave -- Dave Exton e-mail: da I came to Brum in for a years post grad course and I'm still here!

Brum has lots to offer and when our Londonite friends over come their prejudice and visit us they are very pleasantly surprised at the old place. As for the property, the place I live in would be an Arm and a leg in the smoke!!!

True, I moved from Wimbledon to Stirchley, however apart from the house prices on the whole I preferred Wimbledon. Takes me 40 mins to get to work in Brum, about 10 minutes longer than it did in London.
